PCT Day 138: Fire detour mile 11 to 30

September 17th, 2018

This morning we woke up early in order to get to Stehekin before the post office closed. It did not rain today, which was great after a week of rain. Our feet and legs still got soaked though due to snow and condensation. Twenty miles of the PCT were closed due to a fire. The detour turned out to be longer and harder than the PCT. We had two extra passes to go over and the trail was very overgrown. There were steep switchbacks covered in snow on both sides of today’s pass. We were regretting not taking the ferry option of the detour to shorten it by 19 miles. We saw lots and lots of bear scat full of berries as we got to lower elevation. Unfortunately, we did not see any bears though. We got to the road and got a hitch instantly. They dropped us off at the bakery where we had vegan brownies! Yum! Then we got another hitch instantly to the post office in time to pick up our resupply package. We could have taken a shuttle for $8 each. Mr. Freeze and Apache convinced us to spend the night in town at the free campground rather than getting back on the trail right away. We are drinking beer overlooking a beautiful lake.
