PCT Day 49: Mile 852.5 to 872.3

June 20th, 2018

Today was Selden Pass. It was the easiest of the passes so far–a gradual approach with just 3,000 feet of gain, and almost no snow at the top. We got to the pass at around 14:00 and had bibimbap burritos for a late lunch. Yum. Then we descended for a long time until we hit our campsite at the bottom. Half way down we had to cross Bear Creek, which was thigh deep and had a fairly strong current. There are lots of mosquitoes at our campsite, but we got set up early enough to hang out in the tent (aka stretch) and avoid them. We’re setting our alarms early tomorrow so we can make sure to make it to the 9:45 ferry in time to resupply at Vermillion Valley Resort.

  1. Good going. Darn, no pic of Bear Crk crossing. Wanted to share it. It’s always notorious early season & more so this year. Last August we crossed on stepping stones without getting wet

    • Hi Jackie! Thank you for the comment and for following along. We actually hiked this last year — we put 2018 at the top of every post in an attempt to avoid confusion, but sorry about that! We are posting each day exactly one year later, so we did Bear Creek on June 20, 2018. I wish we had taken a picture of the crossing–I guess we were too focused on crossing! It was a hard one!!
That said, we hiked much of the JMT in August/September 2015, and the creeks were much lower that time of year. In 2015 we only got our feet wet once, crossing Evolution Creek. (See photo of other Evolution Creek crossing from 2015 here: https://thruhikers.co/modified-jmt/ .) Last year in June our feet were always wet. It sounds like 2019 hikers have it even tougher than we did.
What did you hike last year?
