PCT Day 83: Mile 1503.2 to 1526.6

July 24th, 2018

We woke up with ash on our tent and backpacks from nearby forest fires that have filled the sky with smoke. We broke camp early and were hiking by 5:13 am to beat the heat. The forecast was for >100° F in Castella, the town where we resupplied yesterday, so we had to get out of there pronto. Our plan mostly worked: before noon we had hiked nearly 14 miles and climbed from ~2000 feet to ~5500 feet where it was much cooler (but still way too hot). Then we found some shade and siesta’d for four hours. Eventually we moved on to the next water source (which involved climbing even more) and made camp. There are thunderstorms in the distance, but hopefully they’re far enough away that we’ll stay safe and dry. We have reached the Trinity alps–a beautiful mountain range in CA that is not well known. We will be in this range for the next several days.
