PCT Day 97: Mile 1820.9 to 1839.9

August 7th, 2018

We tried to leave Crater Lake early this morning, but before we knew it we got sucked into the town vortex and were enjoying coffee, a restaurant, and chatting with other hikers. We got onto the trail around noon. A few miles of the official PCT are closed due to a recent forest fire, so we took the detour along the rim of Crater Lake (coincidentally, we hiked the closed portion when it was previously open on a weekend trip in 2015). The detour along the rim of the lake was beautiful–it had amazing views for miles of the deepest lake in the USA and the mountains around it. But, the air was smokey today so the views weren’t quite as remarkable as they were when we visited previously. We spotted a marten as we hiked today.
